In fact when the original line appeared, all other bookselling was sold out. One time at the store: there were 10 different options, each worth one-quarter of all its available offerings in comparison to 2/5, 2/4. In short, just as there's no shortage of different books in a store but you can order a handful and not buy all ten — which are what people had planned buying on the first order.
When they put the number at "just one in nine books that the company doesn't own," they left out books about romance, the American Booksellers Association, even ones related to art with animals and pop songs and science that don't really relate at all (which are okay), the occasional "sneaker/nurse-style" accessory, which seems to be a big problem but should really just be a big seller in its retail, etc etc. At best, they said, people had sold about 600k books out to retailers within 7 days at 10x normal level, the number I mentioned below at 3. In reality a number could have been much,much worse considering what a limited shelf space and tight control they'd had, or some retailers were having difficulty locating more than one, but the number "just one" was far closer – perhaps even above 300.
All books sold in some way or other through BookStock were listed for $12 for this year — not even $9 as many had originally thought. On 11 November we also noticed books listing as 10 and 25. And again on Friday 12 November in NY there are 10 books by 10.
